Bug Blitz

  • Gungahlin Valley Ponds 13 The Valley Avenue Gungahlin, ACT, 2912 Australia (map)

Spring is the perfect time to discover the underwater world of the Gungahlin Valley pond.

SEE Change Gungahlin is inviting all local budding bug detectives to come along and dip into the microscopic world of the aquatic bugs that live in our pond.

Happily, on this occasion we’ll be relying on dip nets and magnifying glasses, not snorkels!

A healthy pond produces a healthy ecosystem with happy frogs ,fish, birds and plants.

The marvels of a healthy pond are plainly a delight to see but we plan on investigating whats going on, hidden under the water.

Amazingly, there is a world of aquatic insects that are an essential part of the life cycle of our pond, busily working to keep our water sparkingly clean.

Its our champion water bugs that are great indicators of waterways health as some insects can survive in poor quality water, and some cannot. We’ll find out more about them from our guest speaker.

SEE Change Gungahlin is fortunate to have Waterwatch Coordinator at Ginninderra Catchment Group, Yolandi Vermaak who will help us discover which tiny creatures live in our pond, what part they play in the ponds ecosystem and just what they can tell us about the health of our pond water.

Come along, bring the whole family for a citizen science adventure.
