Waste

Reducing waste, and consuming less and more ethically, is a great way we can all help the environment. SEE Change supports a range of activities that aim to transform the management and avoidance of waste in our region.

WasteLess Group

WasteLess are a SEE Change special interest group that focus on encouraging Canberrans to reduce waste by running campaigns, holding stalls, talks and making submissions to ACT Government. The group meets about monthly in North Canberra.

Plastic Waste

There are many ways that you can reduce plastic waste. The SEE Change Wasteless group has developed 31 ideas for reducing plastic waste. Whilst originally developed for the 31 days of Plastic Free July, they can be implemented any time of the year. Thirty one plastic free ideas here

Compostables?

Most people want to make choices that are positive for the planet. However, good ideas can have hidden problems – as is the case for compostable products (e.g. cups, plates, cutlery). Without any large scale industrial composting facilities in Canberra, compostable products usually end up in landfill. Read more about the issues and the options (especially reuse) here.

Repair Cafes

In Canberra, repair cafes are run in Bruce, Ginninderry, Hawker, Hughes, Tuggeranong and Watson. Bring along your broken items and see them get repaired. Learn new skills, and connect with the community. There is also a recycling hub at some of the repair cafes, which accepts hard to recycle items. More information here

Clothing Waste

We can reduce clothing waste by buying less clothes, caring for our clothes, upcycling, sourcing second hand, buying quality clothes that last and responsibly disposing of clothes when no longer needed. For more information on how to reduce clothing waste, go here

Food Waste

An estimated $20 billion worth of edible food is wasted each year in Australia. We can contribute to reducing food waste by planning your meals, make use of everything in the fridge before it expires, eating leftovers and freezing food for later. If you do end up with some food scraps, composting the scraps will turn the scraps into a valuable resource for our soils. More information here
