This house demonstrates that knockdown-rebuilds don’t have to be big, bland boxes that take up their whole block, but can be stylish, compact, flexible and environmentally responsible. This house has been designed on passive solar principles with a northern orientation, concrete slab floor, highly insulated walls and roof, and double-glazed windows. Recycled timber, brick, concrete and plastic have also been used where feasible. The house has an 8 star energy rating and is very comfortable to live in with minimal need for extra heating or cooling. The all-electric house has a 19 kW PV system and battery which has virtually eliminated the need to draw electricity from the grid and is also charging their electric car for free. Although the house is slightly larger than the one it replaced, there is less driveway and more space for a new native garden and vege patch. All rainwater falling on the block is either collected from the roof or retained in the garden.
The house has been occupied for about 18 months and the owners are happy to share their experience of designing, building and living in the house over both Winter and Summer. Even if you are only renovating your home, you will certainly pick up lots of information here on how you can create a solar powered, energy efficient and comfortable house and a native, water sensitive garden.
