MOTHERLOAD: Community Screening

  • Smith's Alternative 76 Alinga Street Canberra, ACT, 2601 Australia (map)

You don't have to don the lycra to join this growing global movement!

MOTHERLOAD captures a new mother's quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of modern life, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote.

Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Motherhood was challenging, but to Liz hauling babies via car felt stifling. She Googled "family bike" and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.

This documentary has helped inspire a global community to rethink their methods of transport in this changing climate. Cargo bikes are reconnecting people with nature, eliminating transport emissions and helping people get active!

Join our SEE-Change Belconnen Group at Smith's Alternative on Tuesday 20th July from 5-7pm for a screening of this uplifting story and hear from some local Canberrans about their own experiences using and transitioning to this active means of transport. Grab your tickets here!

We will also have some cargo bikes on display thanks to our growing E-Bike Library. This event will give you the opportunity to learn more about this fantastic initiative and connect with the growing cargo bike community right here in Canberra.
