Canberra Plastic Free July Challenge 

Take the Canberra Plastic Free July Challenge!

During July 2024, the SEE Change WasteLess group is inviting Canberrans to reduce single-use plastic waste. The Canberra Plastic Free July Challenge is part of the global Plastic Free July challenge.  

You are invited to identify one area where you create single-use plastic waste and take an action which will reduce or eliminate that waste. Some examples are: 

  • Drink your tea or coffee at a café (assuming your café uses REUSABLE crockery) or use your own BYO REUSE coffee cup instead of using a plastic takeaway coffee cup. 

  • Use a REUSABLE coffee plunger instead of coffee pods 

  • Use loose tea in a REUSABLE tea pot or tea infuser instead of a tea bag 

  • Shop at a bulk food stall that allows you to use your own containers, eliminating plastic packaging. 

  • Use a REUSABLE water bottle instead of bottled water 

  • Use your own REUSABLE produce bags when you shop for fruit and vegetables 

  • Buy clothes made of natural fibres 

  • Use a REUSABLE bread bag when you buy bread

How does the challenge work? 

Identify one area of single-use plastic waste and an action you can take to reduce or eliminate that plastic waste. You might choose one from the above list or do your own research. If you have identified an area of single-use plastic waste that you find particularly annoying but can’t find an alternative, email wasteless@seechange.org.au and we might be able to suggest an action you can take to eliminate that plastic waste. 

Having chosen an action to take, the challenge is to implement that action during July 2024. Hopefully, you will not find it too difficult and you can continue to take that action after July 2024, making it a new habit.  

Once you have implemented that action, you are welcome to tackle another area and use these ideas to keep tackling single-use plastic waste throughout the year. Every action makes a difference.
