Cultural learning: reflections from the community

Read through some of the lovely reflections from participants involved in our Cultural Learning project.

The Cultural learning journey has been a pivotal 'life changing' experience for me which has been rewarding and also challenging a number of my perspectives. I'm deeply grateful for Uncle Wallys' deep sharing of his culture and willingness to share both the joy and pain of growing up in a community that had been so impacted by colonisation. I strongly urge others to join the 'Cultural Learning Circle' and deepen our connection with our local Aboriginal community.

Thank you so much Hannah and Izzy for running such a profoundly affecting program. I honestly wasn't sure what to expect when starting this. I really didn't expect to learn so much, to feel that I was starting finally to understand Aboriginal concepts that had always seemed out of reach and at the same time to open up so many new aspects that I still don't understand. I'm really looking forward to what's next.

I valued my experience of four yarning circles with traditional Ngunawal custodian Wally Bell, organised by Hannah and Izzy for SEE Change. We reflected together and explored positionality, privilege and the deep imprints of colonisation, including the numerous massacres of indigenous Australians, and the suppression of these stories. Indigenous world views where people and country are sacred family and deeply related, is going to be important wisdom for white, western culture to relearn in partnership with local indigenous people for our thriving future.
