Compost workshop - hot composting

Get stuck in to helping build a hot compost heap - learn to create compost on a larger scale

Jenni and Brian in Hackett build a large-scale, hot compost heap every Autumn, which enables them to have a very productive suburban block, full of veggies and healthy fruit trees. Come along to watch the building of the compost heap (and pitch in!) and learn about some of the processes required for successful composting.

  • This type of compost heap doesn’t need turning and will get to about 70 degrees – that’s hot enough to knock out all weed seeds!

  • This method generates about two cubic metres of beautiful compost, ready for mid-winter preparation of veggie beds and feeding fruit trees.

  • Building the heap takes all day, and you are welcome to drop in as we demonstrate the Indore method of making compost (outlined in Peter Bennett’s book, The Organic Gardener).

  • Brian will explain worm farming basics and Jenni and Brian will explain all the places that that their kitchen scraps end up, from the chickens to trench composting.

Please wear appropriate clothing for getting involved with the compost process.

Includes: Compost talk by Brook from the Hackett Compost Collective at 1 pm

Brook will explain how Community Composting helps to avoid landfill gas, a significant contributor to climate change. The Hackett Compost Collective also employs hot composting. Brook can share some tips to get your small scale backyard composting a little hotter and more productive.
