"Tearable party" and sustainability meetup

We're combining a calming yet productive activity (tearing up old newspapers) with community building around sustainability

Concerned about climate change yet not really an activist? Already making lifestyle changes on an individual level yet wondering if that's really enough?

While we need individual and political action to turn around climate change we also need to focus on the crucial link between the two - community building.

"Personally, my journey towards a more sustainable lifestyle has not been an easy one. Without good role models I have often felt like a bit of a weirdo when carrying out small improvements like re-using a paper bag (from eg. a bread loaf) to use as a sandwich wrap or to buy mushrooms in etc. Fortunately I have grown past such insecurities. Now I can take pride in being a part of normalising such behaviours.” -Brook Clinton, founder of the Hackett Compost Collective and SEE-Change Project Officer

This event is all about creating a safe (no judgement) space about the challenges and celebrations in moving towards a more sustainable lifestyle. Potential conversation starters on the day:

  • How have sustainable changes improved your life?

  • What habits are hard to beat when aiming for a low-resource life?

  • What sustainability tips would you like to share with others?

  • Do you suffer from eco-anxiety? and if so, what’s a good remedy for you?

Speaking of remedies, we find that a manageable, yet productive task can work wonders to gain a sense of doing SOMEthing to combat climate change. Therefore, our sustainability chat is going to be centred around (quite literally) a big pile of old newspapers that we’re all going to hand shred into little pieces. These will form a useful reserve of carbon-rich materials to feed the compost heaps managed by the Hackett Compost Collective. At the same time the activity will remind us that small actions, amplified on the community level are the best way to make an impact.

Join us for some afternoon tea, contribute a little bit of labour and who knows? maybe you’ll make some new friends that will be invaluable resources of knowledge, skills and shared motivations.
