Encouraging Native Biodiversity into the Home Garden

With Blake Canackle

Workshop description

In this workshop, participants will learn all about the interactions between native fauna and local soils and how to foster this connection in your home garden. From the Blue Banded Bee to reptiles and the microscopic world, your home garden will be buzzing with life with Blake's practical tips!

Target audience(s)

Everyone! Anyone can learn how to improve their home gardens and promote biodiversity of native fauna. We all share this space and helping each other is the way forward to improve the place for future generations.

Workshop length

Two hours.

Workshop requirements

Between 15 and 20 participants is good but can go over if required.

Having access to a screen (either projector or large TV with HDMI compatibility) is ideal. I have a presentation about fauna and soil that takes around an hour to complete. We then do some basic soil testing outdoors. I supply the materials, laptop, HDMI cable, water, rags and pH testing kit.

Chairs for the participants would be great for the presentation and if they prefer, they can bring some gardening gloves.

Weather is best if it's not the middle of winter or raining for the outdoors soil testing. Otherwise, any other time is fine.

Facilitator bio

I have been working in the conservation and horticulture industry for almost twenty years, from the Australian National Botanic Gardens to The Department of Food and Agriculture and Kings Park and Botanic Gardens in Western Australia, and then back to Canberra undertaking bush regeneration and teaching conservation. I believe that education is the way forward because we only know what we know at the time and it's time for us all to learn more.
