Go behind the scenes at the Community Toolbox
Canberra’s first tool and equipment library has been loaning out items to the community since 2021 – helping people reduce consumption and borrow instead of buying new. The library is home to over 1,000 different tools and items for DIY, craft, cooking, home projects, leisure activities and more. In May this year they reached 10,000 loans!
We chatted to Kathy, convenor of the Toolbox and new SEE Change Executive Director, to find out more about the behind the scenes of the Toolbox!
Can you share a story about a memorable project someone completed using borrowed tools?
There have been so many people who have been delighted by what they have achieved. A young woman renovated her kitchen and another took a kayak out on the lake to get a better view of Enlighten.
What has been the biggest challenge in keeping the Toolbox running, and how have you tackled it? Finding permanent premises. We have been in a demountable building for three years, but we need a long-term solution that will facilitate our hopes for a maker space and women’s shed.
What’s your vision for the future of the Toolbox?
The ultimate goal is for borrowing to be the easiest option – and that means getting the tools closer to where people are and having more opening hours.
What do you wish more people knew about the Toolbox?
That it’s not just tools. We have a range of equipment that most people don’t need to have on hand all the time – including thermal cameras and kayaks
Any items on the wishlist for the Toolbox?
Our members tell us when they can’t find the thing they’re looking for. At the moment, we’re sourcing picture framing equipment, which we hadn’t even considered.
