‍ ‍Reuse what you have in the fridge

The WasteLess group monthly challenge for April is to try reusing what you have in the fridge in order to reduce food waste. Using up what you have in your fridge can be a little daunting!  You open the fridge and you notice you have some wizened mushrooms, some sad leeks, a few egg yokes, the dregs of a carton of cream and a half a cup of white wine left in the bottle in the fridge door. What can you do with that? What you are looking at is most of the ingredients to make a savoury Bread Pudding.

Some people have a natural flare with disparate ingredients to whip them into a culinary feast when the rest of us need ideas, pictures, recipes and maybe a video to follow.

If it’s ideas you need that the top recommendation is the book “Making a meal of it – smart ways to buy, store and use up food” by Jane Willcox and Rosemary Cadden.

These Australian authors have considered everything from Apples to Zucchinis and lots in between. They will tell you how to store the food and then give recipes to use up one aged apple through to, too many ageing apples. The pumpkin section is a delight with recipes for frittata which will use up the pumpkin pieces and zucchini as well! The pumpkin pie recipe uses up quite a bit a left-over pumpkin and tastes delicious. The contents page is alphabetical, so grab the book, peer into the fridge and find a simple way to use up what you have in the fridge.

Ozharvest also has recipes available to help you use up what you have in the fridge and cupboard. https://www.ozharvest.org/use-it-up/recipes/?

Another source for ideas is “Stop Wasting Food: Use What You Already Have at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTJEVhP_iV8.
